Kamal Haasan, who has taken on the AIADMK government on corruption issue, on Thursday shared the dais with opposition DMK leaders including M K Stalin while Superstar Rajinikanth chose to sit in the audience at the platinum jubilee celebrations of Murasoli in Chennai.
An exhibition to showcase the daily’s evolution into a vocal media tool to propagate the Dravidian ideology and a potent weapon to take on the political opponents was launched on the premises of the newspaper office located at Kodambakkam.
As an 18-year-old, DMK president M. Karunanidhi started publishing handwritten notices named Murasoli, under the pen name Cheran in 1942, while the Second World War was underway.
Since then, Murasoli has played a significant role in advancing causes championed by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’s Dravidian movement and later in nurturing DMK as a political party through the writings of C.N. Annadurai and Karunanidhi.
“There are century-old newspapers in the country. What is special about Murasoli is that the founder is still alive to witness its platinum jubilee. The exhibition will constantly remind the new generation the meaning of hard work, and the progress of a political movement,” said former Minister E.Ve. Velu.
Besides Rajinikanth, former cricket board chief and India Cements Chairman N Srinivasan and popular yesteryear actor Prabhu, son of late thespian Sivaji Ganesan, were among others who attended the 'Murasoli' celebrations.
