Kamal slams TN govt, director wants 'Ulaga Nayagan' as CM

Even as Kamal Haasan has hit out at the Tamil Nadu government's cinema policy, Alphonse Puthren, the director of Premam, has wanted Kamal to be made a one day Chief Minister for Tamil Nadu.

"If there is a option like in mudhalvan film...to appoint a chief minister for one day . I think Kamal Hassan should be given one day for caring Tamil Nadu," he posted.

He added: "Just one day would do . I hope it happens soon. He would take government to next level with his innovative ideas. This is just my wish . Please forgive this child if I said something wrong :) :) :) :)"

Meanwhile in his post, Kamal said: ""Neighbouring states like Kerala have totally desisted from levying any more state tax on Cinema over and above GST. The film industry requested the CM of Kerala Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan and he through his Finance minister quickly announced that Kerala will not be levying any more taxes on the already beleaguered film business. Karnataka has gone even further to facilitate the well being of the film Industry. Telangana and Andhra are also doing their best for their film industries. It is only Tamil Nadu Govt that has brought it to 30%."

He said further: Filmmaking in this State has been made difficult deliberately. There are further tortures and systemic corruption that the film Industry has to endure under this regime.

The 'Ulaga Nayagan' added: "All factions of the Industry are agitated. I’m trying my best as any sensible individual of the industry to maintain solidarity and not play into the hands of any self-serving and avaricious politician Before Bihar used to be the Nations whipping boy when it came to corruption. Now TN has left Bihar leagues behind. Film Industry is one among the many Industries asphyxiated by the prevailing systemic corruption in the State."

Rajini breaks silence on tax row, urges TN govt to withdraw

Superstar Rajinikanth has finally broken his silence on Tamil Nadu government's decision to levy 30 per cent local tax on film tickets.

In a tweet from the United States, the top actor has urged the state government to withdraw the additional tax, which has affected the industry.

"Keeping in mind the livelihood of Lakhs of people in the tamil film industry, I sincerely request the TN GOVT to seriously consider our plea," he posted.

Rajini's tweet has come at a time when theatres across Tamil Nadu are shut because of an indefinite strike due to the extra tax.

Earlier, director Cheran posted: "Rajinikanth sir pls must raise your voice to reduce GST and 30% tax by TNgovt.. It's time to save our industry your voice make some value."

Under the Goods and Services Tax, film businesses have to pay taxes to the tune of 28 per cent for tickets over Rs 100 and 18 per cent for those priced below Rs 100. Tamil Nadu is said to be the only state in India charging an extra tax in addition to GST.

Amid reports of fresh patch-up plans between OPS & EPS groups, AIADMK Amma MLA praises Sasikala

Finance minister D Jayakumar, one of the senior leaders of the AIADMK (Amma), has said that talks for patch-up have once again been initiated with the rebel faction AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma), led by former CM O Panneerselvam.

Meanwhile, an AIADMK Amma MLA on Tuesday credited jailed party chief V K Sasikala with the continuance of the party-led government in Tamil Nadu and likened Palaniswami to 'Bharath', a character in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Thangatamilselvan, a vocal supporter of the AIADMK Amma faction.

On the other hand, the Election Commission will soon decide on holding the by-election to the RK Nagar assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu which was cancelled on complaints of bribing of voters in April, CEC Nasim Zaidi said on Tuesday.

In the meantime, the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday witnessed noisy scenes involving arch rivals AIADMK and DMK after an opposition member was evicted during a debate over the issue of arrests of state fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy.

Protesting the Deputy Speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman's order evicting their colleague J Anbazhagan, DMK members staged a walk out.

The 12 April by-election, which was seen as a virtual battle for Jayalalithaa's legacy among the AIADMK factions, was cancelled after a large number of complaints were received about the alleged bribing of voters by TTV Dinakaran, deputy general secretary of one of the AIADMK factions.

ISIS operator held in Chennai, shocking details revealed

Rajasthan police's anti terrorism squad (ATS) on Tuesday detained a man from Chennai in connection with its probe into a case of funding the terror group ISIS.

A Special Operation Guard (SOG) police team from Rajasthan arrested the 36-year-old man, suspected to be an ISIS supporter, in Chennai on Tuesday.

The suspect, identified as Haroon Rasheed of Sowcarpet in Chennai, had allegedly transferred funds to ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) bank accounts through an agent in Mumbai. The police team was also checking his possible role in smuggling gold from the northeast.

Rasheed’s name was revealed by Jamil Ahmed, who was arrested in November last year from Sikar in Rajasthan, for allegedly arranging funds for the terror group.

Rajasthan Additional Director General of Police, ATS, SoG (Special Operations Group) Umesh Mishra earlier in the day said Rashid will be interrogated after bringing him from Chennai.

A senior SOG officer said the arrest had been made based on information they got while questioning Mohammad Iqbal, 32, of Mylapore who was arrested on February 23. Iqbal had allegedly played a role in transferring funds to ISIS through an agent in Mumbai, identified as Jameel Ahmed.

Karthi to rock as cop again

After Siruthai, Karthi is once again playing a tough police officer in Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, directed by Vinoth of Sathuranga Vettai fame.

The makers have said the film's basic plot is based on true incidents. The project has entered the last stage of shooting.

The first look poster of Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, which was unveiled recently, featured Karthi as a tough cop, where he posed a serious look.

The movie is produced by S.R. Prakashbabu and S.R. Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures. Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh play the lead roles in this movie.

Abhimanyu Singh is playing antagonist and Bose Venkat is playing a supporting role. Cinematographer of this movie is by Maya fame Sathyan Sooriyan, stunts by Dhilip Subbarayan, art department is handled by Singam3 fame Kathir, music is scored by Ghibran and editing is by Shivanandeeswaran.

First leg of the filming commenced in January 2017 at Chennai. Then the crew moved to Jaisalmer for the second leg of the filming. In May 2017, the final schedule was again filmed at Chennai.

Theatres strike continues, industry veterans meet CM

Around 1,100 cinema halls and multiplexes across Tamil Nadu stopped screening films on Monday with distributors and theatre owners going on an indefinite strike against an additional 30% tax over and above the newly implemented GST.

Office bearers of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners association, Tamil Film Producers Council and distributors association on Monday met chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and various TN ministers for the past few days to discuss this issue.

Earlier, TNTODA President Abhirami Ramanathan made it clear that they were against the local body levy.

"We are against the Corporation (entertainment) Tax which is 30 per cent. This is in addition to the GST rates (of upto 28 per cent). We are not against the GST. We welcome it," he said.

Actor Vishal said though the State government officials have sought another day to look into the issue the strike would continue on Tuesday as well. The TFPC president said that they would once again meet with relevant officials on Tuesday evening.
