North east monsoon ends without enough rain

It is disappointing winter season for South India as the north east monsoon withdrawn from the region on Wednesday without giving much rain in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

In its weather bulletin, the Regional Meteorological Centre said the NEM rains have ceased over TN and Puducherry. “In view of the prevailing dry weather over south-east peninsular India and other atmospheric changes, the monsoon rains have stopped,” a met official said.

The latest low pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal, which was earlier indicating of giving good rainfall has become insignificant in the sea only. The system is now seen as a cyclonic circulation near South Sri Lanka coast.

The system, so far, has given scattered rains over southern parts of Tamil Nadu, while moderate to heavy showers over Sri Lanka.

The latest statistics, which was taken from October 1, 2016 to December 31, from the Met department also revealed that Tamil Nadu received 62 % deficit rainfall during this north east monsoon season. The State has received only 166 mm against its normal 430 mm during the season.

The monsoon had a delayed onset, with the rains commencing in the State only on October 30. Normally, it must have been at least 10 days earlier by October 20.
