Meet Modi over farmers' issue, Stalin tells OPS

DMK working president M K Stalin, who is the leader of opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly, has urged chief minister O Panneerselvam to prepare a memorandum declaring Tamil Nadu as drought-hit to seek financial assistance from the Union government.

In a statement, the former deputy chief minister urged the chief minister to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in person and submit the memorandum.

He once again demanded for a special Assembly session to discuss the problems faced by farmers in Tamil Nadu.

He said that the relief announced by Panneerselvam to farmers were not at all adequate. "Rs 30,000 per acre should be given as compensation, as farmers are severely hit by drought," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Panneerselvam said he was confident that the Supreme Court would reinstate jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

Reacting to Stalin protesting, Paneerselvam said, “By organising any number of agitations for jallikattu, the DMK (part of the UPA regime) cannot wash its hands off the sin of having issued a notification in 2011 to include bulls in the list of performing animals.”
