"Hi guys Happy to announce my first Kannada movie with Rachan Chandra debut actor #gowdruhotel happy times," he posted on his microblogging page.

This is indeed a big achievement for Yuvan, as he is one of the few music composers from Tamil film industry, other than AR Rahman, who is spreading his influence across different film industries.

Recently, director Selvaraghavan was excited about the background score of his good friend Yuvan Shankar Raja for their upcoming film Nenjam Marapathillai.

Amy Jackson celebrates b'day on 2.0 sets

Tuesday (January 31) was the birthday of Amy Jackson and she celebrated it on the sets of her upcoming film Shankar's 2.0, which has Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead.

According to sources, a huge cake was cut on the sets and Amy was greeted by almost all members of the cast and crew, including Shankar.

Interestingly, this is her second birthday on the sets of 2.0. Last year, Rajinikanth had specially called for a cake for Amy and this year, Amy planned to take her team out for dinner after they wrapped up the shoot for the day.

Amy is a British model and actress, who appears in Indian films, primarily in Tamil and few Hindi and Telugu movies. After college, she began modelling at age 16, going on to win the 2009 Miss Teen World competition and the 2010 Miss Liverpool title.

Subsequently Tamil film director A L Vijay spotted her and introduced Jackson as an actress in the 2010 Tamil period-drama Madrasapattinam.

While further pursuing her modelling career in the UK, Jackson continued working in India and went on to début in other film industries in the next years.

She had her first Bollywood release in 2012, the romantic drama Ekk Deewana Tha, while 2012 saw the release of her first Telugu film Yevadu. She later starred in Prabhudeva's Singh Is Bling in 2015 opposite Akshay Kumar.

Will Rajini act in Mohanlal movie's remake?

Director of Malayalam movie Muthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Jibu Jacob, has expressed his wish to remake the film in Tamil, with Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role.

In an interview with a Malayalam portal, Jibu Jacob has said that his first choice is Rajinikanth to do the Tamil remake of the film.

The discussions over the Telugu remake is almost at the finishing stages and Jibu wants to direct the Tamil remake himself.

Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol (When the Grapevines Sprout) is a 2017 Indian Malayalam domestic drama film directed by Jibu Jacob and written by M Sindhuraj, loosely based on the Malayalam short story Pranayopanishath by V J James.

Produced and distributed by Weekend Blockbusters of Sophia Paul, the film stars Mohanlal and Meena, respectively as Panchayat secretary Ulahannan and his wife Annyamma.

The soundtrack feature songs composed by Bijibal and M Jayachandran, and a film score by Bijibal. The film shows how Ulahannan, a middle aged man rediscovers himself to overcome the boredom in his routine life.

Vijay-61 starts from today

The 61st film of Vijay, directed by Atlee, is hitting the floors today. "From now on, shoot will go non-stop and plans are on to complete it at the earliest," sources said.

The yet-untiled film will have Samantha, Jyothika, Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Kovai Sarala, Sathyan and SJ Suryah in pivotal characters.

The film’s producers Sri Thenandal Films have roped in AR Rahman to compose music and newcomer Vishnu will be handling cinematography.

Meanwhile, after two super hits Thuppakki and Kaththi, it seems the hit combo of Vijay and A R Murugadoss will come together for the 62nd film of the former.

When asked, Murugadoss reportedly said, "We are in a very early stage of discussion. Talks are going on but it is too early to discuss or reveal anything".

The action-thriller Thuppakki was about an army man on holiday, who fights terrorists threatening to attack the city of Mumbai. Murugadoss then directed Vijay in Kaththi which was about the unholy nexus between corporates and politicians.

SC says no stay on Jallikattu law, but warns TN govt

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the Tamil Nadu government's law permitting jallikattu, but agreed to hear a plea against it.

It warned the state government not to allow commotion on the streets, reminding that law and order was its prime duty.

The apex court also permitted the Centre to withdraw the January 7, 2016 notification allowing Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

Asking the AIADMK government to reply to its notice within six weeks, the apex court said, "The question to be addressed is that whether jallikattu can be allowed under the protection granted to certain traditions."

The Supreme Court was hearing a plea which sought a stay on the amendment permitting jallikattu. The bench, however, took exception to the manner in which the verdict was openly defied.

The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Rohinton Nariman told the senior counsel appearing for Tamil Nadu government, said: "We are only concerned with the court's honour, which we all share."

"What was the need for the situation? Why does this situation crop up? There was a situation which needed to be controlled. Please tell your executive that maintaining law and order situation is its prime duty. You please convey this," the bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R F Nariman told the advocates appearing for Tamil Nadu.

RSS route march in Chennai sees mass participation of members

Hundreds of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists on Sunday took out a route march in Chennai to commemorate the anniversary of four national figures, namely, Saint Ramanuja, Guru Gobind Singh, B R Ambedkar and Subhas Chandra Bose

According to an RSS activist the rally was held in Chennai and other parts of northern Tamilnadu simultaneously. Further, he said they conducted a marchpast in Southern parts of the State about two months ago.

The RSS and its political off-spring, the Bharatiya Janata Party have been making systematic efforts to expand its base by holding regular meetings and engaging with various caste organisations.

While the march was earlier scheduled to take place on Kamarajar Salai (near Marina Beach), the imposition of Section 144 under CrPC prohibiting movement in large crowds there resulted in organisers shifting the venue to Egmore.

Addressing the gathering, RSS State organising secretary P M Ravikumar said Ambedkar, Guru Gobind Singh, Ramanujar and Netaji had worked for the uplift of society and raise a voice for the nation’s development.

"With their good deeds they won the hearts of all, and through this rally we wanted to popularise that among the larger sections of the society."

Stalin tries to bring Karunanidhi back to active politics

DMK working president M K Stalin is reportedly taking all efforts to make his father and party president M Karunanidhi to get back into active politics.

"Since Karunanidhi is unwell for the past few months, Stalin, along with other members of the family, is making sure that treatment is being given to the former CM, physically and mentally, to return to normalcy soon," sources said.

"News papers are being read out to him on a regular basis and old songs are played. Also, Stalin is spending more time with his father these days explaining him party affairs and asking him to come to Arivalayam soon," sources added.

Last month, Stalin became the first working president of the party. With the 93-year old DMK patriarch ailing and the party requiring a full time president, the party finally decided to anoint the prince-in-waiting Stalin as the working president.

The party's 3,500-member general council unanimously approved 63-year-old Stalin's elevation by amending the party bylaw.
An emotional Stalin said he was accepting the post with a heavy heart as his father and Thalaivar (leader) was unwell. The council also conferred all powers of the party president on Stalin.

A resolution moved by party general secretary K. Anbazhagan to make amendments in the by-laws to create the new post made it clear that the working president will have all the powers of the president. It was seconded by party's principal secretary Duraimurugan.

TN brings bills to sidestep NEET

Tamil Nadu health minister C Vijayabaskar on Tuesday moved two bills in the state legislative assembly to exclude the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental courses.

The state government maintains that the common medical entrance test - the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) that pits the Tamil medium students in Tamil Nadu and first generation learners in direct competition with others from rest of the country and puts them at a disadvantage.

And that is reason enough why the government wants to do away with the exam altogether.

According to the bill, students would be selected for MBBS and BDS on the basis of Plus Two marks while for the PG courses, besides an entrance examination work experience of candidates would be taken into account as was the case before the apex court ruling.

In 2016, the Supreme Court mandated a uniform entrance test for admission to medical courses.

The examination will be conducted by the Central Board of School Education for the undergraduate course and by the National Board of Examinations for the postgraduate courses.

Late chief minister J Jayalalithaa had strongly opposed the NEET which was sought to be introduced in the last academic year. The Centre had promulgated an ordinance last year to exclude Tamil Nadu from the common entrance exam, but this academic year, all students seeking admission to medical colleges must pass the NEET.

CM talks tough to police, goes soft on students

Tamil Nadu government has announced a Commission of Inquiry to go into the circumstances leading to the violence during the recent pro-Jallikattu stir at the Marina and elsewhere and the alleged police excesses.

In a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said, "At the conclusion of probe, if it was confirmed that such police personnel indulged in such activities, stern action will be taken."

He also announced withdrawal of cases filed against 36 students, "considering their future".

"Legal steps will be taken immediately to fully ease out students from the cases," he added.

According to Panneerselvam, 487 people were arrested in connection with the violence on January 23 across the state.

He said compensation would be paid to fishermen for the damage to their equipments due to the violence indulged in by anti-social elements.

The Cyber Crime Wing of the Chennai City Police, under the direct supervision of city police commissioner, is scrutinising the videos showing police personnel setting fire and engaging in violence.

“If involvement of police personnel in illegal activities are confirmed, stringent action will be taken,” Panneerselvam asserted.

Land registration ban continues in TN

The first Bench of Madras High Court has once again refused to vacate its earlier interim order dated September 9, 2016 restraining the Registration department from registering properties on farm land, unauthorised layouts and water bodies.

The ban on registration of unapproved properties was on Monday extended till 27 February. The government has been given time till that period to come out with regulations for plots and buildings that don't have approval.

The date was extended following a request by the State government lawyer asking for more time.

Though the petitioners, comprising mostly real estate developers, argued about the plight of common people because of this ban, the judge who heard the case, said, "Only the government can take forward this issue. Unless and until they find a solution, the High Court cannot proceed further. Only after they take some stringent measures, the court will decide its judgement on this issue."

When the PIL from ‘Elephant’ K Rajendran, as well as a batch of petitions and impleading petitions from several real estate developers and others to vacate the stay came up before the Bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice M Sundar on Monday, Advocate-General R Muthukumaraswamy requested the judges to grant some more time to enable the government to finalise the rules to address the issue.

Any indulgence on this score or relaxation would take the matter back to square one, the Bench said when the petitioners insisted the Bench relax the stay.

Sasikala to inaugurate Jallikattu in Madurai?

Organisers of Jallikattu from various parts of southern Tamil Nadu on Monday called on AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala and invited her to inaugurate the bull taming sport.

The famed jallikattu at Alanganallur in Madurai will be held on February 10, the organisers announced on Monday after thanking Chief Minister O Panneerselvam for the steps taken by him to revive the rural sport and inviting Sasikala to inaugurate the grand event.

Earlier this month, the Chief Minister, who had gone to Madurai to inaugurate the event at the famed spot, had to return disappointed due to opposition from a section of the people.

Avaniyapuram will be the first to stage the event (February 5), followed by Palamedu (February 9) and Alanganallur (February 10).

Talking to mediapersons, the organisers of the respective villages said this was decided by their village panchayats. Thanking the chief minister for taking efforts to resume the traditional sport, they also invited him to their places to inaugurate the events.

Denying the suggestion that the invitation would mean politicisation of the event, a senior Minister, hailing from Madurai district, said it was the desire of the organisers to have Sasikala for the events.

Chennai violence: HC asks TN govt to explain

Madras High Court on Monday directed the Tamil Nadu Government to file a detailed counter affidavit on allegations of police excesses on 'peaceful' protesters at Chennai's Marina Beach during the recent pro-jallikattu agitation.

The Madras High Court’s principal seat as well as the Madurai Bench on Monday separately sought its response to allegations of police excess and a demand for an external probe into the incidents.

The police and the government had justified the lathi-charge against the protesters, alleging that a mob had attacked the police and resorted to stone-pelting and arson.

Passing interim orders on petitions filed by two senior advocates seeking a CBI inquiry, Justice R Mahadevan directed state's Advocate General R Muthukumaraswamy to file a detailed counter affidavit within two weeks responding to the petitioners' averments.

Justice A. Selvam, who was leading a Division Bench along with Justice P. Kalaiyarasan in Madurai, questioned why even an elderly woman was not spared by the police at the Marina in Chennai.

Petitioners B Kumar and R Gandhi have sought a CBI inquiry into alleged police excesses against the pro-jallikattu protesters who held a week-long stir at the Marina Beach demanding that the ban on the bull taming sport be lifted.

No secret talks with AIADMK: Deepa

Deepa Jayakumar, the niece of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, has denied reports in a section of the media that she was holding secret parleys with some senior members of the AIADMK possibly to bag a role for herself in the party.

Addressing supporters at her residence at T Nagar in the city, Deepa said, "I sincerely thank everyone who has been continuously supporting me. I request you to put an end to rumours. I will not leave those who come to me."

She said that her route would be that of Jayalalithaa and 'Makkalal Naan, Makkalukkaga Naan' (I am by the people, for the people) would be her slogan. "No matter how many hurdles come my way, I will smash them all with your support. Keep on posting your opinion to me (on her political entry)," she said.

Meanwhile, more senior AIADMK functionaries would soon join Jayalalithaa Deepa Peravai, an outfit floated recently in support of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa, claimed former Rishivandiyam AIADMK MLA Dharmalingam.

"I am still the same Deepa. I turned course when I saw people outside my house standing for hours. I don’t know what I can do for them in return," she said.

Recently, Deepa laid claim to her political legacy saying she plans to contest elections and "follow in her footsteps", but saved a bigger announcement for the February 24 birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister, who died last month.

Can't conduct local body polls before April: TN

Two Bills introduced by the Tamil Nadu government in the Legislative Assembly on Monday indicate that the polls for the urban and rural local bodies may not be held at least till April this year, in view of the Class X and Class XII exams.

Local administration minister S P Velumani said that civic polls can not be conducted before April due to annual exams.

The minister said that most of the election officers will be busy with classes 10 and 12 public examinations in April. He said the state election commission has informed that since schools are used as polling and counting stations, they will be available only after annual exams.

According to the Bills tabled in the Assembly to replace the ordinances promulgated by the State government, the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) has submitted that most of the polling personnel are drawn from the School Education Department.

Once the board examinations start, they cannot be deployed for the conduct of election. Besides, most school premises used as polling stations “will be available only after the annual examination and valuation of answer sheets are over in April 2017.”

Elections to the local bodies were earlier scheduled for October 17and 19 last year, but the notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) was struck down by the Madras High Courton a plea filed by the Opposition DMK that due reservation policieswere not followed in respect of ST people.

Suriya is next to Rajini: Gnanavelraja

Producer K E Gnanavelraja of Studio Green said Suriya stands next to Superstar Rajinikanth when it comes to business of his movies.

Speaking to the media, he said, "Si-3 will release worldwide on February 9 worldwide. The picture has come out well according to a select group who saw the film at a sneak preview."

He added: I am confident that it will rock as Suriya has the second biggest market business wise in Kollywood after Rajinikanth. He has also a huge fan base in Andhra and Telengana, where the dubbed Telugu version will open big."

She added: "We know you are the founder of the Agaram Foundation and someone who helps vulnerable children, who like vulnerable animals, need protection from harm, and so we found it impossible to believe you would sincerely advocate jallikkattu, a cruel spectacle linked to both human and bull suffering and deaths- including especially the deaths of youths like the 13-year-old boy who was gored to death in Dindigul- and thought you must have what we would consider a more acceptable intention, movie publicity."

Stalin behind Jallikattu violence: Natarajan

DMK working president M K Stalin instigated the peaceful agitation of students for jallikattu, husband of AIADMK general secrertary V K Sasikala, M Natarajan has alleged.

He alleged that leader of the opposition and DMK working president M K Stalin and his party were behind the violence in Chennai on Monday last.

He demanded that Stalin "take responsibility and apologise" for the violence.

Talking to reporters, Natarajan, who is also the editor of Tamil magazine Puthiya Parvai, said Stalin should "apologise for it."

He said action should be taken against those who were behind the violence including some police personnel who face allegations in this connection vis-a-vis the protests for jallikattu.

On January 23, after police started evicting pro-jallikattu protesters from Marina Beach, a group of protesters set Ice House police station on fire and protesters clashed with police in many parts of the city.

Natarajan said police, who found out about the plan, tried to prevent it by asking the protesters to disperse. He alleged that that was when "they started pelting the cops with stones" and "set the police station on fire."

Section 144 impact: Marina sees less visitors, walkers

Though the police said its imposing of Section 144 at Marina is not applicable for health walks or recreation puposes, the beach only saw less number of visitors on Sunday.

The order, which will be in force till midnight on February 12, was issued in the interest of preserving peace in Chennai and to curtail nefarious designs of anti-socials and anti-nationals to disrupt order.

In a statement, police commissioner S George said, "All assemblies, processions, fasts, demonstrations, human chains, meetings and movement of groups are prohibited in and around the Marina.

The order will apply to areas within the jurisdiction of D5 Marina, E1 Mylapore, D3 Ice House, E5 Fores hore Estate, D1 Triplicane and D6 Anna Square police stations. Anyone violating the order will be prosecuted.

George said, “There is reason to believe that even after demands of jallikattu supporters were fulfilled by Government, anti-socials, anti-nationals and miscreants are trying to spread rumours through the social media inviting the students and others to congregate in large numbers in the Marina and Foreshore areas by spreading their anti-national ideologies.

We learn that there is a possibility they may, once again incite the youth or lead acts of violence, mischief and rioting, that would affect the safety, peace and tranquillity of the citizens and would lead to damage to public properties.”

Arrest me, Simbu challenges police

Simbu aka Silambarasan in his urgent press meet on Sunday sought the immediate release of Jallikattu protesters and fishermen, arrested by Chennai police on charges of indulging in violence.

"The victory attained by the students who protested for the Jallikattu issue is something remarkable and has to be celebrated. All those protesters who were arrested on the last day at Marina must be released," he said.

He added: "Jallikattu must happen every year and we must foster our rich Tamil culture. If there is any problem and if there is another ban or if things don’t go smooth for Jallikattu, i will definitely protest again along with the people."

He also charged that government authorities and police failed to explain the provisions of the ordinance passed in favor of Jallikattu and they did not allow time and space for celebrating the victory of Jallikattu protesters.

The youngsters did not start protesting because somebody asked them to and it was completely their decision to support our Tamil culture, he said.

"Had the Tamil Nadu government properly explained about its law removing the ban on Jallikattu, the violence would not have happened," he said.

On searching him, DRI officials found that Hameed was carrying two bundles of foreign currency in his baggage and also had concealed two more bundles in his rectum.

A DRI official said Hameed could not produce any documents for legal purchase and possession of the foreign currency and as the amount was above the permitted limit, it was seized and he was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 and the Baggage Rules, 2016 read with Foreign Exchange Management (Import and Export of Currency) Regulations, 2015.

Sasikala chairs meeting of AIADMK MLAs, MPs

AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala on Friday met the party’s MLAs and MPs in the presence of Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and gave them a “stay united message”.

Her message comes at a time when there were demands from within that she take over the reins of the government and murmurs that the BJP was trying to split the party.

Party propaganda secretary and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai and other Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs participated.

The MPs “were advised on how they should work in Parliament,” a party release said.

On Friday, Sasikala first met the party’s MLAs at the AIADMK headquarters and then went into a huddle with its MPs at her Poes Garden residence to finalise the strategy for the upcoming Budget session of Parliament.

Opposition DMK is also targeting the ruling AIADMK regime on its “reversal” of stand on issues like the UDAY scheme vis-a-vis the Centre which was initially opposed by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Rajamouli unhappy with another director

S S Rajamouli has expressed displeasure over how the team of Balakrishna's recent film Gautamiputra Satakarni was allegedly misusing his name for promotions.

He said, "When I was asked to do an interview with (director) Krish I obliged because I liked GPSK and genuinely appreciated it.

I was asked whether they can use the excerpts of the same interview for print media too and I agreed. But I was surprised to see when it was published as if I have written a letter.

True, the content is taken from the interview but the way it was phrased is a bit over dramatic. I asked Krish and he said it his team’s over-enthusiasm.

"I waited for a clarification from them, but it didn’t come through. My view towards the film, Krish and his team hasn’t changed.

I wish the film collects even more paving way for more historical… Just that the letters are not written by me."

SPB greets Yesudas for Padma Vibushan

Veteran singer S P Balasubrahmanyam has heaped laurels on legendary singer K J Yesudas for bagging Padma Vibushan, one of the highest civilian honours of the country.

He posted on Facebook: "My Anna, Shri. Yesudas is conferred upon with Padma Vibhushan. Proud of you my dear Brother. The next level is not faraway. The entire country should feel proud of my brother."

Only recently, SPB, who completed 50 years in the film industry this year, paid his respects to KJ Yesudas by performing a paadha puja.

In his address, SPB said that he wanted to pay his guru dakshina to Yesudas, who he referred to as 'my guru, brother and father figure'.

"My thirst is quenched. God has been kind with all of us. Maybe, he has been kinder with me because I stand behind him in talent or voice, but still I could sit along with him, and he has come to bless me on this occasion' We all pray that he should live long and he should keep singing and bless the entire world with his gandharva gaanam," SPB said.

Yesudas lovingly chided SPB for his modesty and pretending to still being a student of music. “He is gifted with all great musical talent but always pretends as if he does not know anything.”

He also praised the 'breathless-singer' for his multi-decadal journey in music which he also wished would continue for more years.

Mention of 'Chinnamma' creates uproar in Assembly

The mention of AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala's name in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by a ruling party MLA on Friday created a flutter, with the DMK questioning it.

"Respects to Amma (late chief minister J Jayalalithaa), and respects to Chinnamma (Sasikala) as well," said Kunnam AIADMK MLA R T Ramachandran as he raised a question to know if a textile park would be set up in his constituency.

Immediately, deputy leader of opposition Duraimurugan stood up and asked who the MLA was referring by the name Chinnamma.

This angered the ruling party MLAs. But the DMK leader stood his ground and wanted to know who the MLA was referring to.

To this, Speaker P Dhanapal said Ramachandran had made a mention of Sasikala as she was the General Secretary of his party, AIADMK.

"They (AIADMK) make a mention of their General Secretary much like you (DMK) take the names of your leaders during debates," he said.

Later when senior AIADMK MLA K A Sengottaiyan moved the motion to thank the Governor for his address to the assembly, he mentioned 'Chinnamma' at the start itself and criticised Duraimurugan for raising this issue.

Jallikattu row echoes in Assembly: DMK walks out, CM says anti-socials entered protest

Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said anti-social elements and miscreants had infiltrated Jallikattu protest at Marina with an intention of diverting it, which made the police to disperse the gathering.

He promised that the "evil forces" behind the violence in Chennai on Monday would be identified and brought to book.

Panneerselvam said following the police announcement early on January 23, asking the protesters to leave the Marina beach, about 10,000 of them had dispersed while about 2,000 stayed back.

As the State Assembly met today after two days break, Opposition Leader in the House and DMK working president M K Stalin raised several questions about the violence during the Jallikattu protest on 23 January and asked the Chief Minister to clarify on the issue.

Replying to this, Panneerselvam said that anti-national and anti-social elements did not want the protest to end. 'Police used minimum force against rioters to safeguard public life and property,' he added.

"Various organisations and anti-social elements had infiltrated the pro-jallikattu protests (at Marina) with the intention of diverting it," he said.

The DMK led by Stalin however staged a walkout from the Assembly stating that the Chief Minister did not properly respond to their questions.

Vijay, Murugadoss together again

After two super hits Thuppakki and Kaththi, it seems the hit combo of Vijay and A R Murugadoss will come together for the 62nd film of the former.

When asked, Murugadoss reportedly said, "We are in a very early stage of discussion. Talks are going on but it is too early to discuss or reveal anything".

At present, while Vijay is busy with his 61st film being helmed by Atlee, Murugadoss is directing a Tamil-Telugu bilingual starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role.

Their last two outings saw movies dedicated to the army and to farmers. Murugadoss’s first collaboration with Vijay had come in 2012.

The action-thriller Thuppakki was about an army man on holiday, who fights terrorists threatening to attack the city of Mumbai.

Murugadoss then directed Vijay in Kaththi which was about the unholy nexus between corporates and politicians.

According to the source, Vijay will start shooting for Atlee’s film by first week of Febuary. Both of them worked in Theri (2016). Reports suggest that the makers have planned to start the shoot on February 2 with a pooja.

In a statement, AWBI secretary M Ravikumar said no cases will be filed without the approval/decision of the board.

"The AWBI has no intention to challenge the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 2017 and any petition already filed in its name will be withdrawn," he said.

"The board has received news reports and electronic media reports stating that the AWB moved the Supreme Court challenging the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, 2017 to conduct Jallikattu in the State of Tamil Nadu. If at all any petition has been filed challenging the ordinance on behalf of the AWBI, the same may be withdrawn immediately," he said.

India faces greatest threat from within: Prince of Arcot

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali has said, "our great secular country, India, over centuries has faced the onslaught from other countries."

He said in his Republic Day message: "Now the greatest threat appears to be from within, and it is the responsibility of every fellow citizen to ensure that these divisive forces are nibbed in the bud, and our country, India, should be a glowing example in this 21st century for national integrity, communal harmony, secularism and unity in diversity."

The Prince said, though we celebrate India's 68th Republic, we must at least now realise that democracy and social justice are not just interlinked, but also inter-independent.

It is common knowledge that more than 30 crore of our population are living below poverty line without proper food, shelter, education and employment.

Unless justice is done to them by way of elevating their social status, the democratic machinery of our country would have failed in its duty, he added.

Anirudh, Nayanthara come together for a song

Music composer duo Vivek-Mervin has roped in Anirudh to sing a song from the album Engapora Dora, a film starring Nayanthara in the lead role.

Vivek says, “The number, Ra Ra Ra, is an intense motivational number that comes in a crucial point of the film. This song will be playing at the background when Nayanthara’s character decides to take revenge against the evil forces.

Since it is an intense number, who better than Anirudh to sing for us? He is a dear friend of ours and his addictive voice was just perfect for the song.”

There will be some sentences between the songs which will be spoken by Nayanthara. So this is the first time Anirudh and Nayanthara are singing a song together.

Amajor portion of the movie has been completed and plans are on to launch the audio soon. Two audio tracks including'Vaazhavudu' were released recently.

The album will be released by Sony Music soon. “We are planning to release the background themes (five) along with the three songs in the coming months,” concludes the music director.

"Vijay Sethupathi is an experienced actor, so I get to learn more by sharing screen space with such an actor. He is friendly on the set and makes me feel comfortable," she says.

The film has had several cast changes in just a couple of months. Earlier, director Paneer Selvam confirmed that Ritika Singh was approached, but she couldn’t commit to the project because of her busy schedule.

In a statement, Stalin said that it’s highly condemnable that force was being used to disperse the peaceful crowd who were ‘fighting democratically'.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rangarajan sought his urgent intervention in the jallikattu issue and urged Union government to give an assurance for amending the act concerned to remove bulls from the list of animals that are not to be exhibited.

Ramadoss condemned the police action declared that the peaceful protest of the students and youth had created history by forcing the state government to pass an ordinance, which did not see the light for the last two years.

Leaders of People Welfare Front (PWF), including Thirumavalavan, on Tuesday blamed the police department for the violence on Monday, saying that the police planned and executed the attack to curb Jallikattu protesters.

The violence happened when Chennai police started removing scores of protesters who were demonstrating at the Marina beach for the past one week so as to seek a permanent solution for organising the bull-taming sport ‘Jallikattu’.

Kamal Haasan slams Subramaian Swamy

Kamal Haasan has come out with a couple of tweets, in which he said 'sami'. It is said he was referring to Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subramanian Swamy who reportedly slammed the Jallikattu protesters and also the actor.

"Hi Samy.AmTamilwallah. CM should have met his people. Politicians includ. MKG. Ceasars humble b4 people .why not CM.Tag it2him frnd," he said.

Kamal added: "Decided not 2 answer samis insinuations.Take over T.porikkis u R in g8 company.Kamraj Anna Rajaji my father & more மோதி மதித்து விடு பாப்பா."

In a press meet earlier on Tuesday, Kamal termed the agitation as a symbol of "discontent" and lauded the participants for their "cohesiveness" and maintaining discipline during the week-long stir.

While criticising the police action yesterday, he said it was a mixed bag for the students who hogged the "limelight" for making peaceful protests but also experienced "bloodshed" during the last day of the protests.

Jyothika's upcoming film Magalir Mattum is said to be hitting the screens this summer. Suriya on Sunday released the second poster of Magalir Mattum.

Releasing the poster on his Twitter page, Suriya wrote Jyotika plays a character called Prabha.

After garnering rave reviews for her comeback film 36 Vayathiniley, the dynamic diva is back with Magalir Mattum in which she plays Prabha a powerful documentary filmmaker, who takes up a cause and fights for it.

The movie is written and directed by Bramma, in his second venture after Kuttram Kadithal (2015). The film features Jyothika in the lead role, while Saranya, Bhanupriya, Urvashi, Nassar and Livingston play pivotal roles. Produced by Suriya, the venture began production in July 2016.

Talking about the poster, he shares, “This particular scene was shot in Agra and we filmed a small portion in and around the city as the story travels to North India.”

Stop Kerala from constructing dams across Bhavani, OPS tells Modi

Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advise Kerala to stop work on the construction of two check dams across the Bhavani river.

In a letter, he pointed out that Tamil Nadu’s concurrence was not obtained for the check dams and the matter was sub-judice.

"The Kerala government may also be advised not to take up any project or works without obtaining the prior concurrence of the Tamil Nadu government and until the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee come into force and judicial references are finally settled," the chief minister said.

Panneerselvam said the media reports have caused great concern and anxiety among the people of Tamil Nadu dependent on waters of the Cauvery basin including the Bhavani, for irrigation and drinking water supply.

The Kerala government had commenced the earth work for laying the foundation of check dams at Thekkuvattai, Manjikandi and Padavayal, Panneerselvam added.

Noting that the special leave petitions filed by Kerala and Karnataka challenging the Cauvery tribunal's 2007 final order and that of Tamil Nadu (related to certain aspects of it) were pending in the Supreme Court, he said they were set to come up for hearing on a daily basis from February 7.

Centre to withdraw Jallikattu notification from SC

The Central government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it would withdraw its 2016 notification allowing bull taming sport Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu in view of the fresh legislation, passed by the state assembly, on the issue.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s statement for the Centre was spurred by a mentioning made by a lawyer as soon as a three-judge Special Bench sat for a scheduled hearing in the BCCI-Lodha Committee spat case.

Justice Dipak Misra, who heads both the Jallikattu Bench and the Special Bench in the BCCI case, told Rohatgi that such an application of the government, if filed, would be considered by the Jallikattu Bench in due course.

The notification by the NDA government had removed bulls from the list of animals which cannot be used as performing animals.

The court, which was hearing an appeal against the 2016 notification, had reserved its verdict on its legal validity. The court had also put a freeze on the notification, disallowing Jallikattu again.

Earlier, the Centre requested the SC to postpone its judgment as it would vitiate an already emotionally-charged atmosphere in Tamil Nadu.

The O Panneerselvam-led government swiftly moved to promulgate an ordinance allowing Jallikattu in the state

RJ Balaji thanks students for protests

RJ Balaji, who played an active role in students protests for Jallikattu, has thanked them.

"I was not alive when 1940s agitation that brought the Tamilians together but today I’m alive to see the same spirit from you, students," he said.

"I am fortunate to have shared your will, strength and emotion," he said, adding: "Thanks for giving me an opportunity to be a part of this glorious movement."

"There is no honour bigger than being a messenger, who wanted to mobilize the spirit. Salute each one of you for making it happen through your dignity and unity”, added Balaji.

Earlier, as violence took place on Monday, Balaji requested the protesters to go home. He said the government promulgating an ordinance in itself was success to the peaceful protests conducted over the last week.

He said in a video statement: "Instead of celebrating the first success (of making the Government to promulgate an ordinance), why are you venturing into violent protests?"

He added: The protests which were held peacefully over the last week should not end like the way it is turning out now.

Balaji said further: "I appeal to the protesting students and public to go home. Protests are over. Please go home."

Jallikattu violence: Cops, protesters blame each other

After six days of peaceful protests across Tamil Nadu, the jallikattu movement, which sought to protect the traditional bull-taming sport from court-imposed bans, turned violent on Monday.

While the police alleged that protesters turned violent and started attacking him, agitators said the police personnel only triggered violence.

Police said ‘anti-social elements’ crept into the protests and instigated vulnerable youth to indulge in violence. Even as the State Assembly passed the Bill on jallikattu, some of the protesters were in no mood to disperse.

“We saw an unusual number of police nearing the Marina Beach early on Monday morning and they forcefully tried to evict us. As they came in more than a thousand of us formed a human chain near the sea,” said a student who was at the spot during the unrest.

Arterial lanes across Chennai had been blocked by agitators holding black flags, who were demanding a ‘permanent’ solution to jallikattu. The GN Chetty road, a lane that connects T Nagar to Nungambakkam, Egmore, Cathedral road and even the Marina beach, saw over 50 people standing in unison and raising slogans against the state government.

Meanwhile, Jallikattu would be held at Avaniapuram in the district on February 5 in which about 500 bulls would be used, officials said today.

Earlier even in the South-West monsoon a deficit of 20% was recorded. All the 32 Districts have received deficit rainfall and the deficit ranges from 35% to 81%.

Protests withdrawn at Marina, Jallikattu Bill passed at Assembly

Week-long demonstrations over Jallikattu ended on Monday, after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a Bill removing the ban on the bull taming sport.

Earlier, tense moments prevailed with police forcibly evicting protesters on Chennai’s Marina Beach that resembled a wrestling ring.

Police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas at several places in the Tamil Nadu capital. In Coimbatore, police pounced on a man who threatened self-immolation. On their part, the agitators resorted to violence and even torched a police station.

The much-awaited bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to make jallikattu a permanent sport in rural Tamil Nadu was passed by the state assembly unanimously in a special session on Monday evening.

By passing the bill, the state government has replaced an ordinance promulgated on January 21.

"The state government has decided to exempt the conduct of jallikattu from the provisions of the said central Act and therefore the government decided to amend the Act in its application to Tamil Nadu," said the government.

Rajini's emotional appeal to protesters, says he is pained

Expressing deep anguish over the incidents of violence during the pro-jallikattu struggle across Tamil Nadu, superstar Rajinikanth appealed to the protesters to call off the agitation immediately.

In a statement, Rajinkanth appealed to the protesters not to give any room for some antisocial elements to capitalise on the their hard-fought struggle earning goodwill and name and to tarnish the image of police force that gave protection to them during the days of struggle. He asked them to call off the agitation immediately.

"You should not allow them (anti-social elements) to bring disrepute to your movement and goodwill, besides the police who have been supportive of your protests," he said.

"I humbly request you to immediately end this protest," he added, urging that the assurance by the central and state governments of a permanent solution should be respected.

"At this juncture, I am grieved to see certain incidents," he said in an apparent reference to the violence and the police crackdown.

He said some "anti-social elements" were now trying to bring disrepute to the students' movement and the goodwill earned by them and asked them not to allow this.

He also added that miscreants have been trying to hijack the very peaceful protests.

I am not entering politics: Hiphop Aadhi

Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi has dismissed the rumours that through these protests, he is trying to venture into politics, through a video.

The music composer stated that he had quit the protest in Coimbatore as he was hurt by certain allegations and not out of fear.

He said that he left the protests at the VOC Park in Coimbatore as he was 'emotionally hurt' on seeing posters, pamphlets and speeches in the crowd trying to arouse anti-national feelings by abusing politicians including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said some even tried to create a communal divide among volunteers, showed disrespect towards the national flag and placed demand for a separate country, while the state police continued to supporting them by providing protection.

In a Facebook live stream, Aadhi said, “Many people asked me why I left Coimbatore in between a protest. I did not leave because of fear, but I left because I was hurt. I have been associated with the cause since 2006. When the protest started, it was decided that Karthikeya Sivasenapathy and P Rajasekaran would be the ones who will lead us, and be projected as the opinion leaders."

"When I was in Coimbatore for a whole day, certain events that happened there really hurt me."

"I was speaking on the microphone at an event, when I was approached by a group of youngsters, who asked me to participate in a parallel event that was taking place."

"However, what I witnessed there shocked me, as they were walking all over the Indian flag and indulging in other anti-national activities. I'm for the Jallikattu protest, but there is no compromise to my identity as an Indian. When I refused to speak at their event, they challenged me saying that I should participate if I was a true Tamizhan."

"In another place, I saw a man announcing on the microphone that the Indian government only works for Hindus and not for Muslims. How did this become a Hindu-Muslim problem."

"I welcome it. I am happy. Please give up your protests," he told students and youth even as incidents of violence across Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu marred what was acclaimed as peaceful mass protests that began on Tuesday last.

Apart from thousands of commoners, GV Prakash Kumar and Raghava Lawrence tried to reach Marina but they were also stopped by the police.

Earlier, Balaji was one of the active participatns of the protest, it is to be noted.

He began by speaking about his reasons for favouring the sport which is a tradition of embracing or hugging the bull and explained how the game which is predominantly played by men also involves women.

Kamal talks to CM about police action, approaches PM too

Actor Kamal Haasan has spoken to chief minister O Panneerselvam about the police action on protesters.

"A looming question. When the students were calmly waiting to see what decision the assembly takes , Why preempt with police action ?" he posted on his microblogging page.

He tweeted: "Spoke to the Honrbl.CM of TN. The looming question has been asked of him. He will answer soon. They're eager to satisfy you. Stay calm."

He added: "Have informed our Honrbl.PM through the best of my connections. The Honrbl. Justice seekers will have to maintain peace."

None can take away your rights. Pls. stay calm. The highest office in the country is watching & will talk in your favour soon. Maintain calm, the actor-filmmaker said.

Radha Rajan apologises for sexual remark, says she was misquoted

Animal rights activist Radha Rajan has sought to clear the air on her reported remarks on Jallikattu protesters, which triggered protests against her,.

In a release, she said, "the statement on 'free sex'; which is doing the rounds on social media is not a factual account of what I said.

I spoke to a person who told me he was calling me from a renowned international news agency. In my answer to a question about the role of people's sentiments and the role of the judiciary I gave them a political and social example both of which was not about Tamil Nadu or Tamil people.

The free sex referred to a social movement among a section of people in a western country and the political movement referred to a North Indian State.

In the answer I did not mention any state, country or people by name. The words Tamil, Tamil women was not mentioned at all. I am stating the facts as they are.

The telephonic conversation with the news agency happened more than twenty days ago, much before the current protests for Jallikattu
began.

I request the people of Tamil Nadu to accept my clarification and to please end the protests against me. I know this statement has hurt Tamil people for which I tender an unqualified apology."
