The first confirmed case of Zika in Tamil Nadu in recent years has been reported in Krishnagiri district.
The 27-year-old infected man has been fully cured, a senior state government official said. Laboratory tests done in state facilities confirmed the presence of Zika early this month, the official said.
Blood samples of the tailor, a resident of Natranpalayam Panchayat who reported to the Anchetty primary health center with complaints of fever, redness in the eye, photophobia, skin rashes and joint pain, was confirmed to be positive for Zika virus by labs, including National Institute of Virology in Pune.
Principal Secretary, Health, J Radhakrishnan said the patient was treated at the primary health care centre in Anjetty at remote Denkanikottai Taluk of Krishnagiri district.
A zika outbreak last year across continents from Africa to the Americas to Asia had spread panic far and wide and prompted travel advisories to these regions. In India, experts felt it was just a matter of time before the infections were detected.
Earlier this year, in January and February, two cases of Zika were detected in Ahmedabad, before which in November last year a pregnant woman was found to have contracted the infection. The three cases were reported in the public sphere by the health ministry only in the end of May 2017.
IMR director general Dr Soumya Swaminathan said, "So far 40,000 people have been tested for Zika in the country."
