After many rounds of questioning, Malayalam star Dileep was arrested on Monday for the kidnapping and sexual assault of an actress in February.
Dileep, who ranks only behind Kerala’s two “superstars” Mohanlal and Mammootty in terms of popularity and box-office draw, was arrested in Kochi for his alleged role in the conspiracy behind the abduction and assault of the well-known actress in February.
Kerala police chief Loknath Behera said Dileep was arrested after the police secured fresh evidence in the case.
"Dileep has been arrested. We are questioning him," he told reporters. He said no other person has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
"We are very clear about proper treatment. There will be no violation of rights and all legal processes will be followed," Behera said.
Though his arrest was recorded around 4 p.m., the actor was summoned by the SIT to the Aluva Police Club in the morning itself. Sources said he had been charged for his alleged involvement in the criminal conspiracy. They said the conspiracy was hatched at a city hotel almost a year back.
