Thamizh Padam to have a sequel soon

Director C S Amudhan made his debut with Thamizh Padam the first spoof film in the history of Tamil cinema. The film released in the year 2010.

Now the director has revealed plans to make a sequel for the movie. Siva will play the hero in the sequel too. The flick will be bankrolled by Y Not Studios banner.

"he script is done. But you know, we keep making revisions every Friday. I expect us to be on the floors in two months, soon after Shiva is back from his strenuous training," the director said.

Thamizh Padam is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language parody film written and directed by Amudhan, in his directorial debut. The film stars Shiva and Disha Pandey in the lead roles.

The film's plot parodies contemporary commercial films in Tamil cinema, mocking the stereotypical scenes. The film was distributed by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies, and it was released on 29 January 2010 and won critical acclaim and commercial success at the box office. The film was later remade to Telugu as Sudigadu.

Vivegam gets UA, but released pushed to Aug 24

Ajith's big budget action thriller Vivegam has been censored with UA certificate. Sources say that the film has some intense action sequences and hence, the officials have advised parental guidance.

The film has been confirmed to release on August 24, according to its makers.

While fans are slightly disappointed that the film has been postponed from its original release date ofAugust 10, they heaved a sigh of relief that the release has been finalised.

Vivegam is by far the most-awaited film in Ajith's illustrious career. After filming for more than seven months, the shooting of Vivegam came to an end earlier this month.

The film directed by Siva and produced by Sathyajyothi banner also marks the Tamil debuts of Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi and Kamal Haasan's younger daughter Akshara Haasan.

The Vivegam teaser was released by the film's makers on May 11 at 12 a.m and it shows Ajith Kumar running about, flexing his muscles, dodging bullets and shooting bullets. Vivegam teaser has become the fastest movie teaser to reach 5 million views within 12 hours.

Nalini, Perarivalan to come out of jail?

The Madras High Court on Monday issued notices to Tamil Nadu government to examine a petition filed by Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case, seeking parole for six months to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding.

Nalini Sriharan last week moved the Madras High Court seeking 'ordinary leave' for six months to make arrangements for her daughter's marriage.

Nalini, lodged in a special prison for women in Vellore, said she had sent representations to the Tamil Nadu chief minister and inspector general of prisons seeking parole, but there was no response from them.

As a life convict she was entitled to be granted ordinary leave for one month once in two years, Nalini, who has been in prison for 26 years, contended, adding she had not availed any such leave so far.

"Since I have to make certain arrangements for the marriage of my daughter Harithra, who is currently living with her grandparents in London, I made a representation to the chief minister seeking six months parole on November 12, 2016," she said in her petition.

When Nalini's plea came up for hearing today, justice M S Ramesh ordered the state government to file its response by August 7.

He ordered notices to the home secretary of the Tamil Nadu government, director general of prisons and superintendent of Vellore prison.

As TN makes final attempt over NEET, HC says no to 85% reservation in medical seats

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday made the "final effort" in seeking exemption for the state’s students from common nation-wide medical entrance test — NEET, with its representatives taking up the issue with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court on Monday upheld an order quashing 85 per cent reservation in medical admissions for state board students.

The move comes as a massive relief to CBSE students in Tamil Nadu. The court dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal challenging the quashing of reservation to state board students.

When the petition came up for hearing, Justice Nooty Ramamohana Rao and Justice M Dhandapani observed the appeal filed by the State do not have merits.

A single judge of the court recently quashed government order that reserved 85 per cent of MBBS/BDS seats for State board students, while limiting the percentage of seats for CBSE and other board students to 15.

The High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Government to conduct medical admissions without any further delay.

The Court has also observed that the unskilled teachers in State Board schools are the reason for less pass percentage.

FEFSI declares strike from Aug 1

Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) has declared strike from August 1, upping pressure on the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC).

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, FEFSI president RK Selvamani said that one of their main demands was that only members of FEFSI should be used in film shoots.

“The FEFSI has nearly 25,000 members and it is unfair if the council refuses to pay the wages which have already been agreed upon,” Selvamani said.

"We have already taken a serious view of complaints made by TFPC and issued a strict warning to workers who did not follow rules. Those who spoke against TFPC president Vishal have apologised," he said.

Reacting to the strike call, actor Vishal, president of the Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC), said that there would be no change in their stand and that they would continue shooting with or without support from the FEFSI.

Minister says OPS is like brother, TTV says AIADMK teams will unite soon

Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani on Sunday said former chief minister O Paneerselvam was like a brother and AIADMK's two factions will work together soon.

Meanwhile, AIADMK (Amma) deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran on Sunday said there are no differences in the party or in his family.

Speaking to reporters, he also said he will take up party works after August 5. He expressed hope that the warring groups of the party would unite soon.

His uncle and AIADMK (Amma) general secretary V K Sasikala's brother Divakaran on Sunday said the party can not be weakened.

Dinakaran and Divakaran are no longer at loggerheads. This development assumes significance as TTV is all set to return to the party on August 5.

Sasikala's sister-in-law Santhanalakshmi, died after prolonged illness at a Chennai hospital and her final rites were carried out on Friday in her hometown Thanjavur.

Seated together, Dhivakaran and TTV were seen talking to each other with a composed demeanour. They also addressed the media together.

Jaitley pays tributes at Jaya memorial, hails GST

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday visited the memorial of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa at the Marina Beach in Chennai and paid floral tributes.

He, along with Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman, interacted with industrialists in the city.

Speaking at a GST Conclave organised by various industry bodies like CII and FICCI, he said the Goods and Services Tax was not an easy reform to implement but it has evoked great public support with the government deciding not to blink in the face of opposition to the new taxation measure.

"If reform is of national interest, then do not blink. There are people who would trip you and will never allow reforms," Jaitley said.

He said that GST regime will make the economy more efficient, and added that the industries that are opposing the tax reform are doing it to avoid paying income tax.

"Around 72 lakh (7.2 million) existing taxpayers were migrated to GST, even as there were multiple registrations. Already around 12 lakh (1.2 million) fresh registrations have come in. As this number is going to increase, the tax base is likely to expand horizontally," he said.

Bomb threat to Panneerselvam

A ball-like object, which was found near the residence of former chief minister O Panneerselvam, triggered tension at Venus Colony near Poes Garden in Chennai on Friday.

Sources said people who spotted it feared that it could be a bomb and the Teynampet police were informed. Bomb squad experts and police officials rushed to the spot.

They seized a mysterious object which looked like country-made bomb near his house. Police sent it to a forensic laboratory for examination.

On Friday morning, a man who came to clean the house, found the object which appeared like a bomb wrapped in polythene cover and informed police.

"We have sent the object to a forensic laboratory to find out whether it was an explosive," said an investigating officer. A case has been registered and police are conducting inquiring into the incident.

"We are collecting CCTV footages and are trying to find out those who had dumped the object," the officer said.

Nalini Sriharan, a lifer in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has moved the Madras High Court seeking 'ordinary leave' for six months to make arrangements for her daughter's marriage.

Nalini, who is a life convict in the assassination case of former prime minister and has been lodged in the Special Prison for women in Vellore for over 26 years, said, "As a life convict I am entitled to be granted ordinary leave for one month once in two years."

"So far I have not availed of any such leave. Since I have to make certain arrangements for the marriage of my daughter, Harithra, who is currently living with her grandparents in London, I made a representation to the chief minister seeking six months parole on November 12, 2016," she said.

"Since I did not receive any response from the chief minister's office, I made representation to the inspector general of prisons on January 23," she added.

As the prison authorities also failed to respond to my request or grant me leave, I have been compelled to approach the high court seeking relief, she further said.

Nalini was initially awarded death sentence which was later commuted to life imprisonment by the state government.

Besides her, four others, including her husband Murugan (Sriharan), were sentenced to death and three others to life term by the Supreme Court.

With various guessing games doing rounds about the next project of Simbu aka STR, the actor has come out with a clarification.

"Kind & humble request to media, pls stop speculating about my next project. Thanks for your support and pls wait for official announcement", he posted on Twitter.

Earlier, some reports said that the actor has decided to direct and play a dual role in his upcoming film, which is said to be the rehashed version of his dropped project Kettavan.

While some other reports said that he is penning script for Billa 3, in which he would play the lead role.

It is to be noted that his much hyped recent release Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan turned out to be a disaster at the box office.

Meanwhile, sources close to Simbu said that the actor is indeed working on a film, and had done a test shoot, but said that he has been keeping the details about this project close to his heart.

Stalin arrested near Coimbatore

DMK working president M K Stalin was on Thursday arrested near here on grounds of "law and order," when he attempted to proceed to Salem to oversee the desilting work of a lake, over which his party men and AIADMK (Amma) workers had clashed.

Stalin reached Coimbatore airport from Chennai at 10am and was heading towards Salem when the police arrested him.

More than 200 police personnel, led by Coimbatore superintendent of police Pa Moorthy, had been waiting at Kaniyur toll plaza on the outskirts of Coimbatore. When Stalin's car reached the toll plaza, the police stopped the vehicle.

Though party functionaries who accompanied Stalin attempted to resist the police move, the leader was taken into custody.
Over 500 DMK workers had gathered at the place extending support to their leader. More than 100 cadres who crossed police barricade were also arrested and removed from the place.

The police didn't allow Stalin to proceed to Salem district. Moorthy told Stalin that there was tension between AIADMK and DMK members in Salem over the desiliting of the lake.

The PM urged the people to work together to fulfil former president A P J Abdul Kalam's dream of seeing a developed India by 2022 when it celebrates its 75th Independence Day.

"There are 125 crore people and if each one takes one step, then the country would be 125 crore steps ahead," he said.

He said the work culture in central government offices has now changed from what it was earlier when employees used to have a tea break within an hour or so after reporting to work.

Kamal bats for film preservation, restoration

Kamal Haasan has supported the need for film preservation and restoration.

“Digital cinema was ushered in to preserve what we have and not lose everything. It was supposed to use technology and preserve something that’s historic,” Kamal said.

He said this on the sidelines of the pre-cursor to the annual Film Preservation and Restoration workshop to be organised here from October 7-14.

The event is being organised by the Film Heritage Foundation and Viacom18 in association with the International Federation of Film Archives, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, La Cinematheque Francaise, Imperial War Museum, the Finnish Film Archive and the Czech National Archive.

In his address, Mani Ratnam said, "“We have been floundering in the dark, unaware of how to preserve our films. I have lost most of my films. All the films of Balu Mahendra (Tamil filmmaker) are gone. It’s time we start thinking about preserving our work."

The Film Preservation & Restoration Workshop India 2017 aims to train an indigenous pool of film archivists and restorers as well as to create awareness about the urgent need to save India’s cinematic heritage.

FEFSI planning strike against producers?

The office-bearers of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) held an emergency meeting today to discuss their future course of action following bitter difference with Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) on remuneration issue for workers.

In an important decision taken by the Tamil Film Producers’ Council, producers are now free to employ any technician, including those who are not associated with Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI).

FEFSI is an organisation consisting of technicians from the Tamil film industry and is believed to have around 25,000 members.

A FEFSI meeting happened on Wednesday, to decide the union’s response to the TFPC. The decision may result in a large-scale FEFSI strike across Tamil Nadu.

FEFSI president R K Selvamani hit out at TFPC president Vishal and said things can not be solved in a single way as problems exist for 40 years.

It may be recalled that a couple of decades ago, the FEFSI and Producers had a similar showdown. Production came to stand still then.

Spot fine can be paid to Chennai traffic cops via cards

Traffic violators in Chennai can now pay up fines using credit and debit cards with the police ushering in the cashless system to enhance transparency.

The cashless spot fine payment system was introduced with the launch of 100 Point of Sale (POS) machines through which fines can be paid.

Meanwhile, the State Road Safety Council has decided to strictly implement the Supreme Court Committee’s recommendations of cancelling or suspending driver’s licences for traffic violations.

The Council has decided to cancel driving licences for violations of overspeeding, jumping traffic signals, drunk driving, using mobile phones while driving and carrying loads above the prescribed limit in goods carriages.

In the meantime, for depositing e-challans fine, the city police have tied up with India Posts and Central Bank of India. The facility to pay e-challan fine is available at 66 post offices and 31 branches of Central Bank of India.

Vishal-Karthi's Karuppu Raja Vellai Raja dropped?

The buzz in Kollywood is that the much hyped Prabhu Deva’s multi-starer Karuppu Raja Vellai Raja has been shelved.

The shoot for the film, we hear, has ended abruptly and it looks like Prabhu Deva is not planning to revive the project, soon.

Indirectly confirming the news, Vishal is planning to commence Sandakozhi 2 in August and thus, the actor will not be shooting for Karuppu Raja Vellai Raja.

The film is a multi-starrer starring Vishal, Karthi and Sayyesha in the lead and was recently launched in Chennai with an auspicious pooja.

In fact, the film's music director Harris Jayaraj and Prabhu Deva had even gone to London to score the music for the film.

It is said that Prabhu Deva found it very difficult to bring together Karthi and Vishal for the movie's shoot, as they are busy with other commitments.

Madras HC makes Vande Matharam must in schools, offices

The Madras high court on Tuesday made singing of Vande Matharam mandatory in all schools and offices in the state.

The court said that the director of public information will upload a translated version of the National Song in Tamil and English that will be made available in the Government websites and on social media.

Justice M V Muralidharan said that private and government schools in the state should ensure that their students sing the national song at least twice in a week, preferably on Monday and Friday.

Noting that the song can also be played in other government and private establishments at least once in a month, the judge said, "If people feel it is difficult to sing the song in Bengali or in Sanskrit, steps can be taken to translate the song in Tamil."

The court was hearing a petition filed by K Veeramani, a candidate who failed the Teachers Recruitment Board’s written test for the post of ‘BT Assistant’.

Veeramani claimed that he had missed recruitment to the post by one mark due to “wrong” evaluation for a question on Vande Matharam.

"The National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ shall be played and sung in all schools/colleges/Universities and other educational institutions atleast once a week (preferably on Monday or Friday). It shall also be played and sung in all Government offices and institutions/private companies/ factories and industries at least once a month," the Court said.

CM meets Modi, OPS meets Kovind

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought exemption for the state from the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test.

"The chief minister insisted that exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu should be given considering the welfare of the students," said an official release.

Also, Palaniswami on Tuesday called on NDA's vice presidential nominee M Venkaiah Naidu at the latter's residence and extended his support to him in the August 5 election.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members of the AIADMK (Amma), including Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, were present during the meeting.

Meanwhile, AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) leader and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Monday called on President Ram Nath Kovind and NDA's Vice Presidential nominee, M Venkaiah Naidu.

Panneerselvam greeted Kovind on his victory during their meeting in Delhi on Monday, a release from his faction said.

Sunainaa opposite Vijay Antony

Sunainaa of Kadhalil Vizhunthen and Neerparavai fame has been roped in to play the female lead in Vijay Antony's Kaali.

Vijay Anotony is currently shooting for Anna Durai directed by. "He will start shooting for Kaali soon and Sunaina will be playing the female lead in this film as Vijay Antony's pair," sources said.

Sunainaa is popular in neighbouring Tollywood too as she has acted in few Telugu movies like Kumar Vs Kumari, 10th Class and Missing.

To be directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi of Vanakkam Chennai fame, Vijay Antony will be seen playing multiple characters in Kaali.

Meanwhile, Annadurai is directed by debutant Srinivasan. Sources said that the shooting is happening at Thirukovilur and is expected to continue there for one more week.

It is learnt that the actor will be playing dual role for in this flick. It is produced by Radikaa and Sarathkumar.

Close on the heels of releasing the first look stills of Thaana Serndha Koottam, makers of the Suriya starrer are now getting ready to unveil a single from the movie.

The director of the film, Vignesh Shivn has made an interesting announcement saying the first single from the film will be out on July 27.

HC sets deadline for FERA trial against TTV Dhinakaran

The Madras High Court on Monday ordered the trial court to conclude the main proceedings in a FERA case against AIADMK (Amma) Deputy General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran within a period of three months.

In his order, Justice MS Ramesh observed, “The allegations levelled against the petitioner are of serious in nature and in order to secure the ends of justice, a speedy trial is undoubtedly warranted in the present case.

In view of the same, the learned Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate(E.O.II),Egmore, Chennai is directed to conclude the main proceedings, within a period of three months from the date of receipt of this order and if need be, on day-to-day basis.”

Justice M S Ramesh also set aside the charges framed against Dhinakaran by the special court on April 19 and directed the trial court to re-do the process after granting adequate time to the accused to submit his objections and to complete the trial within three months.

The judge asked the trial court to hear Dhinakaran's arguments and gave the AIADMK (Amma) leader just "one working day" to put forth his argument against framing of charges in the case filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate.

Permitting Dhinakaran’s counsel to put forth his arguments afresh on the charges framed, the judge said the exercise should be completed within one working day before July 31. “The ACMM — Economic Offences-II should endeavour to complete the proceedings within the time limit prescribed herein — three months,” the judge said.

OPS, EPS teams in Delhi over AIADMK, TN issues

Both the warring factions of the ruling AIADMK on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of Union Ministers in New Delhi to exert pressure on the Centre to get the Presidential assent for two Bills exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET, besides taking up other issues concerning the state.

Quoting sources, reports said that former chief minister O Panneerselvam had explained to the Prime Minister several issues happening in the AIADMK.

He also spoke about AIADMK (Amma) general secretary V K Sasikala bribing officials in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bangalore.

Senior ministers P. Thangamani, S.P. Velumani, C. Ve. Shanmugam, C Vijayabhaskar and K.P. Anbazhagan rushed to the national capital on Sunday night, while Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami travelled to New Delhi on Monday night.

The Ministers met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan and urged them to take steps to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET.

Panneerselvam, accompanied by Lok Sabha members, also highlighted the problems faced by the people and the protests against the Hydro-carbon project at Neduvasal and against the ONGC pipeline project at Kathiramangalam, wherepolice resorted to a lathicharge recently to disperse the agitators.
