Bus, car trapped in cave-in on Anna Salai; miraculous escape for passengers

An MTC bus and a car plunged into a huge crater that was formed in the middle of the Anna Salai, near Anna Flyover, around 2 pm on Sunday. No one was injured.

The bus and a Honda city car were trapped in the crater after the main thoroughfare suddenly collapsed near Church Park street around 1:30 pm.

According to one witness, the crater formed while the bus was stationery and passengers were disembarking from it. “The road caved in slowly. Perhaps, that is why people were able to escape unharmed,” he said.

Thirty five passengers were evacuated immediately from the bus (number 25G), and no injuries have been reported.

The bus driver told a television channel that the bus had stopped at a bus stop when it began to sink as if the air was let out of the tyres. The passengers were asked to get down immediately.

As the road continued to sink, the police cordoned off the area and diverted the traffic. There was a traffic jam on Kamarajar Salai as Anna Salai traffic was diverted via the main road along the beach.

The fire department later pulled the car and the bus out using cranes.
